WAGGL 50th Round Ambrose Result 11th August 2012
WAGGL’s 50th round may well have been one of the most enjoyable course conditions, competition and round in the history of this mighty golf association.
A fantastic course in the best condition experienced by any WAGGL member who has played their previously, was made all the better by sensational weather and a tense and tight ambrose competition played from the back markers.
With late-mail starter Matt ‘Hillview’ Millhouse turning the competition into a 3 vs 3 3ball spectacular, the competition was red hot right from the first hole.
Millhouse, Dan and Shaun (Team Hillview off a 15.6 hcp) took to the course first (and proceeded at leisurely pace all day) and were immediately into the swing of things with a number of consecutive pars.
Group 2, Carter, Zen and Scorch (Team Zen off an 17.9 hcp) fared much the same racking up 8 consecutive pars from the 1st only to drop 2 at the index 1 18th (played as the 9th). The hole proved a challenge for every group with the ‘hidden’ pond catching out the less attentive WAGGLers.
The final group of Troy, Smudge and Clint (Team Smudge off a 14.4 hcp) were still in contention at the turn but needed a player to step up when others faltered on the back 9.
Highlight of the front 9 was a ‘TV golf’ 4 iron draw from Carter on the signature downhill par 3 16th. Carter left the team with a 10ft putt for birdie (missed) and each player with their wallets a lobster heavier.
The back 9 quickly became a two way tussle between Group 1 and 2 (despite the incessant roars from group 3) from either team never more than 2 shots. Carter again providing the highlights at the par 3 4th. With his team in trouble in the bunker, the man from Mt Isa, came up with a miraculous hole out from the green-side sand to give his side their first birdie of the day (despite hitting 90% of greens in regulation).
However, just as group 2 thought they had done enough to take the win, Group 1 charged home with the par 5 17th (8th hole) proving decisive as they hit the green in two and birdied whilst their closest challengers slumped to a 3 putt bogey.
A 1 shot victory meant Shaun, Millhouse and Dan bathed in the spoils of victory ($40 each, a Carlton Dry and hot 21yr old bar chick to Brett Ogle). As ever, controversy reigned as they failed to submit an official score card despite Shaun’s hasty attempts to fill out a fresh one.
Despite the obvious cheating, everyone who made the journey was a winner on this day. An absolute cracker that will live long in the memory and a fitting way to bring up this WAGGL milestone.
